Code Is Cheap Now. So What's Defensible?

Everyone's panicking that AI killed the software moat. It didn't. It just showed us the moat was never the software.

Code was the expensive, visible, hard-to-fake part, so we let it stand in for defensibility. Then the cost of making collapsed, and we found out the truth: the code was a proxy. The real moat was always sitting underneath it, in the stuff that doesn't get cheaper when code does.

Trust. Nobody hands you their bank feeds because your UI is clean. A clone can copy your features in a weekend. It can't copy three years of not screwing up someone's books.

Position. The moat isn't the integration code, it's where you sit after it's wired in. Switching cost does the work. The connector was just how you got there.

Compounding. This is the one people miss, because it's not an asset, it's a rate. Whoever compounds fastest doesn't just lead. The gap widens on its own, while the cloner's still standing at the starting line.

Judgment. When the deterministic 99% is commodity, the moat moves to the last 1%: knowing what to build, in what order, and when not to ship. That doesn't live in the repo.

A feature is copyable. A thing you'd have to live through to rebuild isn't, because the only input it takes is time, and time is the one thing AI can't compress.

Build the thing that compounds. Let everyone else race to clone the screenshot.
